The alimentary canal is typically a short, S-shaped tube in carnivorous fish, but can be long and convoluted in omnivorous fish to aid in the absorbtion of less digestible plant material. The head is snout-down, with the view looking towards the mouth. In , researchers injected cichlids from the social species Neolamprologus pulcher , either with this form of isotocin or with a control saline solution. The intestine is lined with finger-like out-pocketings villi that greatly increase the surface area for absorbtion.

Traditionally, only the four genera Pristobrycon, Pygocentrus, Pygopristis, and Serrasalmus are considered to be true piranhas, due to their specialized teeth.
However, a recent analysis showed that, if the piranha group is to be monophyletic, it should be restricted to Serrasalmus, Pygocentrus, and part of Pristobrycon, or expanded to include these taxa plus Pygopristis, Catoprion, and Pristobrycon striolatus.
Pygopristis was found to be more closely related to Catoprion than the other three piranha genera. However, piranha have been introduced into parts of the United States, even being occasionally found in the Potomac River, but they typically do not survive the cold winters of that region. Recently a piranha was caught by a fisherman in the Catawba River in North Carolina. This is the first known case in North Carolina and possibly in the region.
Research is being carried out to establish how piranha have moved to such distant corners of the world from their original habitat. It is anticipated that rogue exotic fish traders have released them in the lake to avoid being caught by anti-poaching forces. Home Biology animal Internal anatomy of a bony fish. Alex Safian and Danielle Baker A standard bony fish contains a two chambered heart that is located below the gills. Bony fish and sharks are known to be a single circulation species.
The Heart What is single circulation? The Countercurrent System First, the blood in the gills flows in the opposite direction to the water passing over them. When the water has passed over the gills, the blood is "hungry" for the oxygen that is there.
The blood then becomes rich in oxygen.
